Live Oak in the News!
Live Oak has been in the news this past week, covering the thefts of our rainbow flag, and our determination to continue replacing it. Here are some of the stories:
Followup Story: Austin American-Statesman
It genuinely takes a village to keep that rainbow flag up, so I want to shine a light on the Facilities Team for all their work, Tina Cordes for all the trips to South Austin for flagpoles, Diane Stepakof-Fay for calling the police, ordering new flags, etc, and Carolyn Dower for contacting the media and letting the broader community know what’s been happening. And of course, the entire Live Oak community, that embraces being a Welcoming Congregation to all who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer.
It may seem like a small thing, that flag. But the phone calls and messages I’ve received speak to the larger message: people outside of Live Oak appreciate the love that is underneath our flying the flag on our church sign. In one voicemail message I received, the person said, “I just want to thank you for accepting people as myself and everybody else out there who are gay and it just feels good to know…”
May our flag – and our welcome – continue to wave.
