Boy, I sure am looking forward to this Sunday! How are you?
I’ve been elbow deep in research about Halloween through the ages, and the various battles against the holiday from ancient times til now. I look forward to sharing some of that with you.
But the recurring theme through history, whether it’s the history of Halloween, or the Blitz, or new music movements is this: fun is as necessary to our lives as anything. When I’ve had my low moments the past 20 months, I’ve lifted my spirits by wondering, “And what will our ‘disco’ be?” A couple of years ago, I shared the history of how the disco movement emerged, and it was clearly a response to the heaviness of the late 60’s early 70’s. But this is a pattern we can see throughout history: whenever a society goes through hard times, there is a corresponding response of people wanting fun and joy afterward.
The pandemic is still going on, but we have reason to be hopeful. (Some are predicting that children 5-11 could begin getting vaccinated as soon as the end of next week. Fingers crossed! And may the vaccine for under 5s come soon.)
I hope I get to see you this Sunday. We’re encouraging everyone to dress in costume, and we’ll be pairing Halloween with our “Celebration Sunday” marking the end of our stewardship season. (Be sure to turn in your pledge by midnight Saturday to be entered in the raffle!)
Live music, costumes, and everyone will be invited to become cereal killers. Can’t wait!
